Remember that episode of Boy Meets World when Cory and Topanga are making jam out of a recipe from Couples magazine, and Sean gives them a hard time about it? I think jam-making is not that far into my future. Witness:
Friday
I attended a post-wedding shower for a friend where we flipped through her wedding proofs and gave her a Pyrex baking dish set, complete with carrying case.
Saturday
I went to a women’s brunch at my church, where my friend was the speaker, and contentedly ate quiche-like casseroles as I admired the babies all around me.
JG and I lazed on the couch until we watched Delaware defeat Northern Iowa to advance to the 1-AA semifinals after four long hours of football. I ate my fill of pigs-in-a-blanket during halftime and zonked out during the fourth quarter, I am ashamed to admit.
I made pumpkin dip to bring to a teacher-friend game night, where the cutest cat I have ever encountered climbed into my lap. A dozen of us played The Best Game Ever for five hours and laughed until our stomachs hurt at trying to describe “Elizabeth Barrett Browning,” “mitochondrion,” and “Miss Cha-nandler Bong.”
Sunday
I took a four-hour nap on the couch after lunch.
Monday
JG and I braved the wind and cold to take our annual trip to Longwood Gardens to see the Christmas display, which was amazing. Sadly, my pictures are not. As usual, JG loved the bonsai and desert sections the best, and I marveled at the myriad fountains they had built in the new children’s garden. After a traditional non-buying spin through the gift shop, we put the cost of our tickets toward a yearlong membership (discounts for on-site concerts and events, plus unlimited day passes!), which really made it clear that we are becoming my parents.
Ah, well. I don’t mind being a typical married couple — in fact, I enjoy it very much — but it’s a little daunting to see it all at once in a short weekend. Where do I subscribe to Couples magazine?

Miss Cha-nandler Bong. Good one.
I was a little nervous about putting that on my list, just in case it wasn’t common knowledge, but as soon as I explained, “It’s the one with the game show!” everyone caught on. “I majored in lightning rounds!” HA.
I love love love “The Best Game Ever”, I have played it with my friends with slightly different rules. Such a great game.
And although I am not married, my weekends sometimes look like the one you just wrote about, haha. However, that is not a bad thing.
What do you call TBGE? That’s the only thing we’ve ever called it, but now any other fake-o name sounds totally lame in comparison.
Sounds suspiciously like MY DREAM WEEKEND. Except mine would include some glamorous additions such as watching Tivo-ed “Jeopardy!” and “Forensic Files.”
I love that you Tivo Jeopardy! That is true dedication.
Ted and I frequently have weekends like that…and I really enjoy it!
The only thing I’m genuinely ashamed of is the monstrously long nap on Sunday, but I do enjoy everything else.
Sounds like my kind of weekend!
I still need to play the best game ever. I still have it bookmarked!
You really do need to play it! So far, it has lived up to its hyperbolic name.
I think you will be so glad you have those memberships. You’ll make up the cost very quickly and it’s such a wonderful place to be!
I am totally an Old Married.
I’m really excited to have the membership, although it does make me feel odd and similar to my parents. We just didn’t go to Longwood very often because it felt so expensive, but now we have no excuse. It’s nice to support local stuff, too, of course.
