What would you do with an extra $100 bucks? A thousand? A million?
and Operation Pink Herring asked:
If you won $10,000, what would you do with it?
As I started to write up my responses, I realized that I am incredibly, boringly practical even with mythical prize money, so here are both fun and functional uses, even if I would stray to the latter, if left to my own devices.
$100:
- Fun: A new climbing harness, a big clock for our living room to replace the one that fell to its gory death last year, or a nice dinner out.
- Functional: Binders for storing our CDs, baskets to hide all of our pantry clutter, new bed pillows, or a slipcover and new throw pillows for our old couch. However, I would most likely save it right now because I am on a self-imposed spending freeze until I visit my sister in DC this summer, where the shopping will be intense and fruitful. I guess that’s not so much functional as it is delayed gratification, but it’s certainly not fun.
$1,000:
- Fun: A digital SLR camera and a tripod. A slew of new clothes including good walking shoes, a bright trench coat (maybe teal?), a hip-length black coat for the winter, a non-black pea coat, and knee-high black boots. If that doesn’t exhaust the money, I will also replace my baking equipment.
- Functional: A deposit into the braces fund, most likely, but maybe a new laptop for home.
$10,000:
- Fun: A cruise! Alaska or the Mediterranean, please, depending on the size of the room.
- Functional: Two semesters of very expensive graduate school. Or paying off a big chunk of our mortgage.
$1,000,000:
- Fun: Paying off the house, plus finding and buying our dream lake house (on some yet-to-be-determined lake) and a boat for JG. Oh, and I get a kayak and the rights to decorate the lake house any way I want.
- Functional: Plugging a chunk of the money into retirement, donating to our church’s building addition, and sponsoring as many adoptions as possible.
Previously: Lent, hypothetical actions, superpower, television, favorites

I say paying off the house counts as both fun AND functional for that $1 million entry.
I love that you did fun and functional, because that’s how I always think about hypothetical money, too: “Well, it would be awesome to spend it on _____, but I really should spend it on _____.” Good choices, on both fronts!
Yep, I like the format. Now all you need is that winning lotto ticket
I love this! Might need to steal it!
Great lists! Love!

I totally would go the functional route. Though by the time you reach the $1,000,000 level, there is plenty of room for “fun” purchases too!
I’m glad I’m not the only one who immediately thinks of boring things to do with my money! I like that you broke it up into fun and functional.
I really want an SLR digital camera! Maybe with my stimulus check…
don’t you just wish it wasn’t hypothetical?
