Dogarazzi: Week 44

This week, we made a discovery that was none too surprising after our recent birthday celebration: peanut butter upsets Ted’s stomach. Sigh.

I met a friend for dinner the other night, and JG filled the little Kong toy with peanut butter in an effort to pacify Ted’s need to chew. Our magazine holder is no match for Ted’s teeth, and it’s hard to distract him from a particularly tasty piece of wood, so JG went with the peanut butter. When I got home, I took over Ted duty and we watched the DVRed second hour of the season finale of House. In the last ten minutes of the episode, Ted became very quiet, and I heard the stomach grumble of impending doom. My own stomach lurched, and I pressed my hand to my mouth and looked away.

Thankfully, JG’s stomach is not as weak as mine, and he monitored Ted while I was busy turning green. I held Ted afterward (again!) while JG found a replacement towel for the couch blanket. My own disgust aside, the situation wasn’t so bad. I’m a little disappointed that Ted can’t handle peanut butter, but if nothing else, my insistence that he sits on a blanket while on the couch has been strongly reinforced by the, uh, evidence. The upset stomach explained the lack of eating that day and the heightened crankiness and chewing. Really, it’s just good that we know now about the peanut butter intolerance. And that I would be completely useless if some child were to be sick in my presence.

I handled Ted very gingerly afterward, fearing any aftershocks of stomach tectonics, but he appeared to be fully recovered. In Ted’s book, there’s not much that a tummy rub doesn’t fix, I guess.

We’ve been dealing with, um, explosions, this week. (Sorry - not sure how to say it nicely.) We don’t know what she ate, but she is so sick. The vet said it’s definitely dietary related, because he tested her and she didn’t have a viral or bacterial infection. We only get to feed her 1/4 cup of this mild chicken/rice canned food at each feeding until everything is cleared out of her system. She finishes it and looks up at us like, is this really all you’re feeding me?? Poor little pup.

I hope Ted is feeling better now!

Poor Ted!

Doesn’t it seem like dogs (and, even more, cats!) get over nausea WAY quicker than humans? A few minutes later, they’re on their way.

You have my sympathy. I am total phobic of people/animals being sick in my presence. Glad that Ted is feeling better, though.

Glad he is feeling better! He is so cute. What kind of dog is he?

Oh no! But there’s other stuff you can put in a Kong too, so all is not lost. My mom puts frozen mashed bananas in her dogs’ Kongs. It’s pretty funny.

Poor little Ted! Upset tummies are no fun!

What is with dogs and chewing wood? Rufus loves it!

Dogs recover so fast from puking, it’s nuts! Ben is a puker, so I have unfortunately had to learn to come to terms with cleaning up dog vomit. It was especially bad when we first got him, but once the Vet clued us in to the fact that he just has a super high metabolism that forces him to puke if he goes too long without eating, we’ve been able to keep it to a minimum with frequent small meals. (We also learned to shove him off the couch/bed/whatever at the sound of the first pre-puke hork. I’d rather clean puke off the floor than the bed any day!) He still pukes occasionally, but it’s nothing compared to what it used to be — thank goodness!

Sorry Ted can’t fully enjoy peanut butter, but at least he’s still awfully cute!
