Peas in a pod

On Saturday, my sister and her boyfriend came up to visit for the day, and it was really fun and relaxing. The four of us had lunch at the house, played way too much Mario Kart, and went out to dinner. I don’t think it’s far off to say that Ted was the main attraction; JG and I were merely the chips to his guacamole. Regardless, throughout the ten or so hours we spent together, it was clear that my sister and I are cut from the same cloth.

The Laugh
I have a really loud laugh, which I may have mentioned, and as it turns out, my sister does, too! Seeing both of us toss our heads back, scrunch our eyes closed, and laugh uproariously with mouths splayed open is quite the spectacle, apparently. That’s the impression we got from JG, anyway, who agreed with Zeister’s boyfriend that the sound was “in stereo.” In fact, he went on, if he had closed his eyes, he would not have known which of us was laughing. Oh, I get it, we’re twins. Is that because we’re Chinese? HAHAHA.

The Competitive Screech
Up until Saturday, JG was the only one of the four of us who had ever played Mario Kart on the Wii. I have resisted because getting toasted by JG every time was not my idea of a good time, and I sure as heck wasn’t about to play by myself with him watching me. The surge of the mob pulled me in, and before I knew it, I had a wheel in my hands and my little Mii was in a monster truck. To no one’s surprise, I was terrible. I overcompensated turns and careened into walls, if not off the track entirely, and if there was a prize for missing item boxes, I would have won it. As luck would have it, my sister was almost as bad as I was, and she joined me in the self-deprecating play-by-play. The two of us sat on the edge of the couch, yelling at our little go-karts, and shrieking at every turn or weapon. JG and Zeister’s boyfriend were a bit appalled at the sight of us making a ruckus while we fought for second-to-last place. Hey, eleventh place equals winning! At the very least, it deserves its own victory dance.

The Last-Minute Indecision
Before we changed to go out to dinner, my sister consulted with me to make sure that we would complement each other, but not match. I wore a new black-and-white top from my DC trip, and my sister brought not one, but three, looks to cover her bases. We decided that the cotton dress was too wrinkly, the yellow top was too casual, and the pink top was perfect. Right before we headed out to leave, Zeister said, “Oh, wait! I meant to show you this top with the other shoes!”

JG looked at me, puzzled. “How many pairs of shoes did she bring?”

“Two, not counting the ones she wore up here.”

“Oh.”

A quick consult showed that the gold flats were better than the black platform sandals and we were off, but not before I complained about being puffy and my sister claimed that she looked like a “woman of the night,” which is one of our mom’s well-used phrases. JG and Zeister’s boyfriend, bonded by the experience that is keeping up with the two sisters, exchanged silent, long-suffering glances as we finally headed out the door.

Oh man. Fun times! Fun times! How can you not enjoy a good, from the depths of your stomah, loud, half-screech, guhfaw laugh? That is how I like to laugh! It is very enjoyable! And just you wait – I will get my own Wii (when I upgrade my too-square TV) and practice Mario Kart. Soon, I will be able to consistently finish 10th place or higher. You did not mention that we both made our Miis about the same height, which is to say, when we attempted to approximate our actual heights, our Miis were…….utterly tiny. We must do it again! :-D GD thoroughly enjoyed playing with the puppy and now I must console him regarding his lack of a canine companion for the time being.

This constant referral to me as “Zeister’s boyfriend” relegates me to a supporting role. I am a star! Henceforth please refer to me as G-Dawg.

ps: You and your sister’s Miis were indeed utterly tiny…and therefore realistic.

And this is exactly why I always wished I had a sister growing up. Luckily when I married Tim I inherited two amazing sisters (in-law).

Nobody ever said you had to be good at Mario Kart to have fun playing it. I am constantly falling off the track!

This post makes me miss my seester so, so, so much. When will she come home from the Peace Corps so that I can play video games and consult on fashion with her? (Answer = Christmas!)
