A party and a giveaway

On Saturday, I hosted my Gap Born to Fit Party! Last week, I received two giant boxes of party-prep goodies, like piles of jeans, a digital camera, packets of blue and white M&Ms, a giant popcorn bowl, and Gap tote bags. I spent most of the day making our living room into a mini  jeans boutique:

Gap Born to Fit Party!

[Note: The flowers and Funfetti cupcakes were not included.]

Despite positive RSVPs, there were a couple of no-shows, so I ended up with eight friends, including OPH and Mary Frances. We had drinks (watermelon lemonade was a big hit) and dessert (cupcakes and brownies, per usual) while everyone disappeared into guest rooms to find their right sizes out of the three styles I had from the new Born to Fit line: Always Skinny, Real Straight, and Sexy Boot.

Overall, everyone was really impressed with the quality and fit of the jeans; the most popular style was the Sexy Boot. A lot of girls commented on how soft the denim was, and most were pleasantly surprised that the waist and hips of each cut really did fit them. OPH even said at the outset, “I defy Gap to make a pair of jeans that will fit me!” and she ended up taking home two pairs!

Once everyone had secured their jeans purchases, I wrangled everyone into a round of The Best Game Ever, and there was even a clever, Gap-inspired card:

  • Born to Be Wild
  • Born in the USA
  • Achievement gap
  • Mind the gap
  • Gap-toothed smile

Hilarious moments included me pantomiming twins , a friend describing born as “this is a word about becoming alive as a baby,” and my sister describing “I Want to Hold Your Hand” as “this is a Beatles song about one appendage connecting another appendage!” At the end, the general consensus was that TBGE lived up to its hyperbolic name, and I felt very vindicated, indeed.

The only caveat I must offer about the jeans is that, with the exception of one girl, everyone thought the jeans were really long, even in the regular length. Who were these stick-thin, Amazonian women that were supposed to fit these things? Or maybe I run in a short circle? Regardless, everyone was fine with getting their jeans hemmed because they were free, but a petite or ankle length might be the only recourse for anyone under 5’ 4”. (Be warned: petites are only available online.) However, those who had no luck at the jeans table received a voucher for a free pair of jeans from a store, and everyone got a tote bag and a coupon for 25% off regular-priced denim. It was really fun to see my friends so excited and surprised at what they were receiving, and I felt like some sort of bountiful benefactress because they kept thanking me! It’s not like I bought these jeans for you, but whatever!

Thanks for a great time, Gap and Brand About Town! Let’s do it again really soon!

Ooh, ooh! Pick me, please. I am in need of a new pair of jeans SO bad. My current rotation of three pairs (all GAP, btw) is so threadbare, it’s not even funny. :) Plus, I never win anything, so I’m due.

#2 Kelli on Monday, August 10, 2009 at 12:22 pm

Gah! I was just in GAP this weekend (they’re having excellent sales right now) and was drooling over their new jeans. This party looks so fun!

#3 Janssen on Monday, August 10, 2009 at 12:41 pm

You know I am so freaking jealous that I couldn’t be there. It would, to some extent, sooth my heart to win some free jeans. :)

#4 Merrick on Monday, August 10, 2009 at 12:48 pm

Don’t pick Janssen…she wins everything and I win nothing! Pick me!!!! :)

#5 Megan on Monday, August 10, 2009 at 12:52 pm

Oh, that seems like such a fun party– especially the Funfetti! I am in a weird in-between jeans place right now, so a new pair is definitely in order. :)

my favorite of all time jeans are Gap Long and Lean, and they are sadly around 6 years old and nearing their death. A replacement pair is desperately needed!

#7 janet on Monday, August 10, 2009 at 12:58 pm

As fun as the baby shower I attended on Saturday was, it did not include The Best Game Ever AND free jeans! So glad it was a success, and sorry to have missed it. Somehow I have missed all the parties so far, so maybe I will win some jeans with my comment? I love gap jeans!!

#8 Sherry on Monday, August 10, 2009 at 12:59 pm

On Saturday Old Navy was having a sale on jeans for $10, and I went only to find out the sale was only on kids’ jeans. But you know what else I discovered? I can wear a size 16 in little girl jeans.

But I still want some other free jeans. And I want to know how to host a party like that.

#9 Janelle on Monday, August 10, 2009 at 1:02 pm

Free jeans are always good, especially since mine no longer fit-the one bad thing about losing weight!

#10 Jess on Monday, August 10, 2009 at 1:11 pm

So fun! The party looks like a great time. And I love the little photo montage!

#11 nancypearlwannabe on Monday, August 10, 2009 at 1:25 pm

I’m so glad your party was a success, it looks SUPER FUN! I really, really wish I could have made it, especially since I spent the entire weekend painting my sister’s new house.

#12 Karen on Monday, August 10, 2009 at 1:44 pm

Nothing like a good old-fashioned giveaway to make me de-lurk!

#13 stephanie on Monday, August 10, 2009 at 1:46 pm

The party looked so fun! I used to wear Gap Long&Lean, but then they stopped fitting me properly. (I blame the jeans for changing the cut, although I’m sure it’s really just me getting old.) I haven’t found a Gap pair that fits since, usually because it’s either the waist or the hips that fit, not both, so your friends comments on the fit of this new line is very encouraging!

#14 Anna on Monday, August 10, 2009 at 1:46 pm

What a fun party – even without the Gap swag! I would love a new pair of jeans as none of mine fit quite right since having Lukas in January. Coincidentally, the one pair of pregnancy jeans that I loved and wore to pieces were from Gap!

#15 K on Monday, August 10, 2009 at 1:55 pm

Looks like your party was a success! I would LOVE the chance to try out Gap jeans for free! :)

#16 Janet on Monday, August 10, 2009 at 1:56 pm

No need for hemming! Wear ‘em with high heels! =)

Sounds like a great evening!

#17 Liz on Monday, August 10, 2009 at 2:09 pm

This is so up your alley!! Is GAP coming out with a new line of jeans? I always have trouble finding pants that fit correctly around my hips and waist.

#18 mari on Monday, August 10, 2009 at 2:34 pm

a giveaway will bring out lurkers! the party looks like so much fun. the game sounds intense. i love catchphrase… so much so that i find several days later i’ll still be obsessing over mistakes and how i could have better described … i’d probably explode trying to do TBGE version!

#19 Noelle on Monday, August 10, 2009 at 2:38 pm

When you have giveaways, I swear people come out of the woodwork. Your party sounds amazing and I’m all about trying TBGE :) How did the hemming work out after they’d already been stonewashed? Sometimes I hem my jeans and it never looks professional.

#20 Laurel on Monday, August 10, 2009 at 3:20 pm

If anything can make me come out of lurker-hood, the promise of FREE DENIM is it! I still read regularly, I promise!

#21 Cheryl on Monday, August 10, 2009 at 3:42 pm

Ooooh, free stuff! Yet, like OPH, I defy Gap to make jeans to fit me. If they’re big enough in the hips, they always fall off my butt. But, I’m 5′9″, so maybe I wouldn’t need to hem them.

#22 Mer on Monday, August 10, 2009 at 3:59 pm

Oooh, free Gap stuff would be awesome. My fav things to buy at Gap are sweaters and cardigans, but I’d get a pair of jeans if they were free! I never win anything, but you’re right, the odds are definitely a lot better than usual…

#23 Zandria on Monday, August 10, 2009 at 4:24 pm

That’s so cool that you hosted a Gap party, too! I really enjoyed the one I went to at The Northerner’s house. :)

#24 Anna on Monday, August 10, 2009 at 4:26 pm

It sounds like your party was a great success! How could it not be when free jeans are involved?

#25 Erin on Monday, August 10, 2009 at 5:11 pm

How fun! Looks like a great time. Plus, free jeans? How can you go wrong?

#26 Alena on Monday, August 10, 2009 at 5:15 pm

Um, delurking for the chance at free jeans! Hi! I don’t have my own blog but I found your blog through the pictures of your dog, and stuck around for tales of cooking, kitchen renovations, and more. :-)

#27 heidikins on Monday, August 10, 2009 at 5:16 pm

I am floored that the jeans were “too long”…and I am heading to my nearest GAP just to be sure. If these will work for my 37″ inseam, I’m sold over and over!

xox

#28 melanie on Monday, August 10, 2009 at 5:21 pm

In many brands I need Tall jeans but not from the Gap, they seem to hit me just right. I hate buying “Tall” jeans because they are inevitably too long. It sounds like a great time.

#29 EvilKate on Monday, August 10, 2009 at 5:28 pm

This party looks like so much fun! I love the long and lean jean- but I too had to have them hemmed. I know that sounds dumb because “long” is in the name, but they were the ones with the best overall fit. BUT, for a great fit, it’s worth the few dollars for a hem.

#30 NGS on Monday, August 10, 2009 at 6:24 pm

Huh. Apparently there are a lot of lurkers reading your blog who are coming out for some of your free stuff!! Free jeans rule!!

#31 Jennie on Monday, August 10, 2009 at 8:01 pm

What a fun party! The cupcakes look delicious (per usual). I love GAP jeans beCAUSE they are so long, even the regular cut! (I am 5′10″.)

#32 T on Monday, August 10, 2009 at 8:10 pm

I like Gap jeans!

#33 Z on Monday, August 10, 2009 at 8:32 pm

sounds like fun! as for hemming, well, that’s ALL pants for me since i’m *ahem* vertically challenged

#34 Zeister on Monday, August 10, 2009 at 8:40 pm

It was a fabulous party. No doubt this was also due to me and my fabulous partner when we won TBGE, despite my horrible clue that did include two usages of the word “appendage”…ehhhhhhhhh. I will again consider Gap jeans when I shop now – I can safely say I wouldn’t have before this par-tay. :-D Let’s do it again!

#35 Valerie on Monday, August 10, 2009 at 9:50 pm

I need some jeans! RANDOM NUMBER GENERATOR, PICK ME!!!!!

#36 Anna on Monday, August 10, 2009 at 9:56 pm

I love my Gap jeans—great fit and not crazy expensive! Delurking to say that I really enjoy your blog!

#37 Audrey on Tuesday, August 11, 2009 at 12:07 am

Thank goodness this is one of the rare times that I’m not a month behind on blog reading! Sounds like your party was a huge success. Somehow, one of these days I’m going to need to play The Best Game Ever with you.

#38 Danielle on Tuesday, August 11, 2009 at 1:33 am

What a great giveaway! I’d love to have a party like this :]

#39 Erin on Tuesday, August 11, 2009 at 8:38 am

Oh, enter me, please! I’ve been really good about working out and eating well this summer and, shockingly, I’ve gotten a little slimmer. I’m not, you know, actually slim, but I’m slimmer and all of my jeans are too big now.

#40 Jane on Tuesday, August 11, 2009 at 9:31 am

Pick ME!!! Please!! :)

#41 Kayla on Tuesday, August 11, 2009 at 10:43 am

I have the same problem with the regulars being too long (and I am really leggy). I think their longs became their regulars!

I LOVE Gap jeans though. I just got 2 pairs on (deep) sale a few weeks ago and wouldn’t mind trying their new ones out!

#42 Erin on Tuesday, August 11, 2009 at 11:17 am

Wahoo! I’d love a gift card, but I would have loved being at that party even more.

#43 Operation Pink Herring on Tuesday, August 11, 2009 at 12:24 pm

I have to admit, I was impressed. I mean, TECHNICALLY they didn’t “fit” because I’ll have to hem them… but I’ve only ever had three pairs of jeans that didn’t need to be hemmed, so… you win, Gap. This time.

Super fun party… free jeans, AND I got to meet JG and Ted!

#44 Kristabella on Tuesday, August 11, 2009 at 5:51 pm

As someone who is almost six feet tall with a 34 inch inseam, I LOVE GAP JEANS! Because they are the only ones that are long enough and I can wear heels with them!

#45 Leanne on Tuesday, August 11, 2009 at 6:17 pm

When I was in college, Gap repeatedly came out with Limited Edition jeans only to discontinue them as soon as I found a pair that fit. Irritating, I know. The only thing worse than not being able to buy another pair of your favorite, best-fitting jeans…having some jerk dump bleach in the dorm washing machine while you run back to your room for 5 whole minutes! Grrr! It’s been 12+ years and I’m still not over it…nor have I found another pair of “perfect” jeans. :(

#46 Nic on Tuesday, August 11, 2009 at 11:32 pm

I’m still bummed that I wasn’t able to make the party. So glad everyone had a good time! And of course, I would love to win a pair of free jeans.

#47 vague on Wednesday, August 12, 2009 at 12:12 pm

I’ve been reading your blog for a couple of months now and I feel kind of awful that (I think) this is the first comment I’ve left! How crappy of me to delurk for a contest. Will be more comment-giving in the future!

#48 Jane on Wednesday, August 12, 2009 at 3:00 pm

Thanks for the info on the new line of jeans! I just had a baby 6 months ago so I am in desperate need of new jeans to fit this beautiful new body…haha!…I will have to try the Sexy Boot! And by the way, I love your blog! =)

#49 Bart on Wednesday, August 12, 2009 at 9:35 pm

Janssen told me about your giveaway. Gap is my favorite brand for jeans, so I’m entering to try my luck with the random number generator. Big money, big money . . .

#50 Michelle on Wednesday, August 12, 2009 at 9:54 pm

Ooh I’d love a new pair of jeans for back to school!

#51 Morgan on Thursday, August 13, 2009 at 12:04 am

Years ago Gap had great fitting jeans, but I feel like they kinda lost that for a while… Glad to hear they’ve got it back :]

#52 Brandi on Thursday, August 13, 2009 at 12:33 pm

Sign me up! I love trying to find the perfect jean (have not yet found them…maybe they are at the Gap!).

Looks like you gals had a lot of fun!

#53 HollowSquirrel on Thursday, August 13, 2009 at 1:54 pm

That’s like the most awesomest party ever, and I didn’t even see any guacamole. I swear by their Long and Lean jeans (and I’m NOT long nor lean)…but I’m willing to expand my collection!

#54 Aleta on Thursday, August 13, 2009 at 4:24 pm

I’ve never owned GAP jeans….Express are my favorite! I’m going to have to try them out now!
