Our famous car

Certain friends, while perusing the November issues of Every Day with Rachael Ray and Lucky, have encountered an ad depicting a car that looks vaguely familiar. They think they’ve seen that car before, but where?

Our famous car

As they read the blurb underneath the picture, they realize that they have seen that car, because JG and I drove away in it after our wedding. Then, they call or e-mail us in various degrees of incredulity. One voicemail crowed, “Your car is famous!”

Months ago, a representative from an advertising agency contacted me about the picture of the car I had posted on Flickr. Would we be interested in submitting it for the new Subaru ad campaign? Is it okay if they use text from the blog for the ad?

We thought about it for about two seconds before agreeing, and then came a long waiting period. I wasn’t sure how to break it to everyone without being obnoxious. There is no graceful response when someone starts a conversation with, “Guess what! Our car was in a magazine!”

So we decided not to tell anyone and see how the chips fell. It has been so much fun fielding the phone calls and e-mails, and I love that our reliable old Subaru gets to have its time in the spotlight. Even though we’re not getting compensated, I feel fully vindicated in being too cheap to spring for a limo for our wedding.

On an unrelated note: what have you been cooking lately?

That’s really funny. We drove away in a Nissan. But we didn’t decorate it so I don’t think we’ll be getting a call from them.

I don’t want to be rude or intrusive or anything, but could I get your car’s autograph?

That is awesome! I’ll have to [finally] crack open my Rachel Ray mag (I have a pile growing…. to check it out! How fun!

(we didn’t spring for a limo on our wedding day either and drove away in my Honda CR-V which family had decorated as well. Limos are such a waste of money and there’s no way to gracefully enter/exit one in a long white dress!)
